Trinidad and Tobago’s National Under 20 Women’s team pulled off their second straight win in convincing fashion as they topped Dominica 6-0 at Victoria Park in St Vincent/Grenadines on Tuesday evening.
T&T got goals from US-based player Maya Matouk (15', 29') Shauna Lee Govia (21'), Chelcy Ralph (40') Corel Carmichael (72') and Zoe Swift in the 81'.
Head coach Jason Spence said preparation was the key to the team’s strong showing against their Caribbean opponents.
“Today's performance was just a reflection of our preparations going into the game,” Spence told TTFA Media.
“We scored in the first twenty minutes and closed the game in the first half with a 4-0 lead which is what we set out to do. The team was asked to manage the game and stick to game plan with emphasis now on higher possession and this was done quite well,” he added.
“The team was very relaxed but serious and focused as no celebrating was allowed until the job was complete by winning both games and topping the group. This was achieved and in true Trini style they enjoyed a good celebration afterwards.”
“Maya Matouk was simply amazing in this game. She scored two goals to give us a cushion. A clean sheet again was a reflection of what was rehearsed as I drilled it to our defenders that defence wins championships and today's game heavily relied on their performance.
All in all, it was a very good team performance and we are pleased to have got it right in the first phase of the campaign,” said Spence who thanked his team staff, the support of the TTFA, and the family members of the players for its support leading up to the tournament.
