The Georgian Court University soccer team has made great strides over the past four years to compete with the best of the NCAA Division II East Region. On November 18th, two of its players launched a new chapter in Lions' soccer as they played in the Caribbean Football Union Leg of World Cup Qualifers in Trinidad.
Candace Seaton and Latifah Kelly will made their International debuts with the U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National team when they took the pitch against St. Kitts/ Nevis at Marvin Lee Stadium in St. Augustine, Trinidad. The duo will also faced Cuba and Jamaica as they will helped their country to qualify for the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Guatemala this January.
Cuba and Jamaica join Trinidad and Tobago as the Caribbean representatives. The trio will face Central American winner Costa Rica, which clinched its berth on September 6, host Guatemala and North American entrants Canada, Mexico and the United States in the eight-team finals.
The results of the final round will place three nations into the World Cup next June in Germany.
This marks the first time that current Georgian Court athletes have competed in an international competition. Seaton, a forward on the 2009 squad, finished this past season with six goals a 10 assists. Her ten assists led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and aided in her being selected to the 2009 Daktronics All East Region 2nd Team.
Kelly joined the team midway through the season, starting the final 17 games as an outside defender and recording her first career goal on a penalty kick against Wilmington University on October 27th.
