Malta Carib Alcons recently secured the final remaining spot in the T&T Football Federation Champion of Champions tournament, a qualifier to the National Super League after copping the Eastern Football Association Premier Division title.
The youthful group of players, 17 to 27 years old, ended the campaign with 43 points, after winning 14 matches, losing five, and drawing one in their 20-match schedule.
Coached by the former T&T player/coach, FIFA coaching instructor and currently FIFA technical advisor, Alvin Corneal, the youngsters graduating out of the 45-year-old-institution Alcons Soccer Academy, will now come up against Cunupia FC (Central Football Association), Sidey’s FC (Tobago Football Association), Matura Reunited (Eastern Counties Football Union), Marabella Family Crisis Centre (Southern Football Association) and Police (Northern Football Association).
According to Corneal, the players enjoyed their success following their tour of England last year and now preparing for a tour to Brazil in mid April.
He said, “With a goal scoring statistic of 37 goals for, and 23 against, the joy of success is even greater following the departure of five of the leading players who travelled abroad on school scholarships in the USA.”
Corneal also praised the work of the technical staff duo of manager Kirk Waithe and assistant coach Alan Corneal, as well as the 26 available players, who he said all contributed to the success of this team.
Corneal said, Alcons was moving forward to further develop the institute, and has been able to negotiate five football scholarships in the United States this coming fall.
Prior to that, however, Alcons will aim to finish among the top three clubs in the Champion of Champions to gain promotion to this season’s National Super League.
