First-half goals by Odelle Armstrong and Kareem Frederick earned the men from St Francois Nationals their first title for the season, claiming the Fruta FA Cup on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain with a 2-0 triumph over Cantaro FC.
Armstrong's goal also ensured he finished as one of three leading scorers for the playoffs on four goals. St Francois Nationals, seasoned campaigners in the Northern Football Association (NFA) and local football for many years, failed to secure the covetous Premiership and Championship Division titles, won by Miscellaneous Laventille Utd and North Coast SCC, respectively.
On Wednesday though, they ensured that they did not finish the season empty-handed, downing Cantaro FC. Apart from Armstrong, Joshua Rogers was also among the leading scorers in the play-off with two goals, while Fredericks, Raheem Borde, Andre Joseph, Jared Harry and Rodnel John, each scored a goal apiece.
The game concluded another successful season in the NFA, as the top players now look forward to an NFA All-Star contest with T&T Pro League campaigners Club Sando at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva Saturday at 7 pm. NFA officials will now attempt to sort out matters with the Disciplinary Committee and other NFA committee issues before the curtain comes down on the season.
