The Saint Leo men’s soccer team (3-2) outpaced the Georgia Southwestern University Hurricanes (0-5) by the final score of 5-0 Friday night at University Field. The Lions were led by senior Brandon Whitsett (Palm Harbor, Fla.), scoring two goals in the shutout victory. Eusebio Montoya (Smithfield, N.C.) added a goal and an assist while Jonathan Glenn (Maloney Gardens, T&T) and freshman Bobby Huertas (Lutz, Fla.)scored his first collegiate goal.

The Lions started on a ferocious pace scoring in the sixth minute. Following a foul by the Hurricanes, Montoya set the ball up just to the right of the 18 yard box and drilled the back right corner of the net. Whitsett hammered his first goal of the evening near the end of the first half after receiving a perfectly placed ball from Karl Rydeborn-Tapper (Bromma, Sweden).

The Lions once again scored quickly to begin the half, as Glenn, inside the six yard area, rocketed a feed from Montoya. Whisett found himself in the right place again as a rebound off the ‘keeper came directly back to Whitsett. He put the ball in the back of the net for his second and final goal of the night. Huertas demonstrated his hustle the entire night and his efforts paid off, as Huertas crashed the net and recovered a Kareem Doherty rebound and blasted the ball into the net for his first career goal.

The Lions defense held the Hurricanes shot less all night, while forcing the Georgia Southwestern goalie to make two saves on seventeen shots faced.

The Lions hit the field again Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Lions open up SSC play against conference rivals the University of Tampa at University Field. The match is scheduled to be broadcasted on the SaintLeoLions Audiocast Network.
