Grand Canyon senior forward Andrew Bailey was named the Pacific West Conference men's soccer Player of the Week.
Bailey had three goals and two assists all in the first half of an 8-1 win over Chaminade. It was his first career hat trick. He had two goals in a 3-0 win over BYU-Hawaii last Tuesday.
He had one game winning goal.
Bailey's 12-point week vaulted him to the top of the conference scoring leaders. He is tied with Notre Dame de Namur's Cristobal Montes, who has five goals and two assists in nine games, for the lead among conference points scored and goals leaders. Hawaii at Hilo's Drew Geis also has five goals in seven games this year.
Bailey's 2.0 points per game average leads the conference singlehandedly. He has played in six games.
"It was definitely a confidence booster, and basically I've got to commend the coaching staff for trying some new things and making me an attacking midfielder for the last two games," Bailey said. "Now I'm facing the goal because I'm coming behind the strikers.
"I'm proud of my achievement, but it's more like a team award. I'm just the one getting the benefit of the goals."
Grand Canyon placed five other players on the league's Top 10 weekly honor roll. Pat Perkins, Dusan Radisavljevic, Nick Sykes, Antonio Valera and Franco Carotenuto were also named to the honor roll. Perkins, a sophomore forward, had two goals in the win over Chaminade. Radisavljevic, a senior midfielder/defender, had a goal and two assists, including the gamewinning goal against Chaminade.
Sykes, a freshman forward, had two goals last week. Valera, a freshman forward, had a goal and two assists against Chaminade. Carotenuto, a junior goalkeeper, had a 2-0 record and 0.00 goals against average last week.
"Youngsters like Sykes and Pat have stepped up a lot, and that makes the (opposing) midfielders work a lot more," Bailey said. "Bosko (Jovicevic) has been leading the defense and Joel (Ibarra) has been doing a really good job controlling the midfield. Because Bosko and Joel have been working so hard, I've been able to cheat a little and push up in the attack."
