In a soccer re-match of across-town rivals, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds swept the Columbia Union College Pioneers, 3-0, at Wilson Stadium in northwest Washington tonight. The Pioneers defeated the Firebirds 2-1 in their first meeting on September 4, 2008.

UDC took early control of the game when sophomore defender Samer Shehadeh (Falls Church, VA) took a cross from freshman mid-fielder Alejandro Velasco (Sterling, VA) at 21:59 of the first period to score the first Firebird goal of the night. The second UDC goal came at 41:26 when junior mid-fielder Kendal Penny, on an assist from sophomore forward Akeil Belfon, sent the ball over the goal to the back of the net.

Alejandro Velasco scored the third Firebird goal in the 86th minute unassisted.  Four yellow cards were issued during the match, with UDC receiving three of them. Firebird goal keeper Isiah Munoz, a junior from Grafton, Ohio, made 10 goal saves to hold the Pioneers scoreless.

UDC, now 2-6-1 for the season, will see their next action on Saturday, October 11, against Nyack College in New York.
