The Fordham men's soccer team won their first game of the season in thrilling fashion as freshman Veer Lakhan-Joseph's first collegiate goal came in the second half to push the Rams over the Marist Red Foxes 1-0.

Fordham improves to 1-4 while Marist falls to 3-1-1 on the year.

The first half was rather quiet for both teams with Marist getting off two shots to the Rams' one. The best opportunity for either team came on a Marist free kick 25 yards out that ricocheted off sophomore John Niyonsaba and out of play.

Things heated up early in the second half with the Red Foxes having back-to-back corner kicks in less than 30 seconds, but the Rams' defense held steady and did not let one get by.

It was in the 65th minute that Lakhan-Joseph broke free of two defenders while taking a pass from junior Louis Vigliotti and chipped the ball over the sliding Marist keeper, Joe Pilla, for the score.

Lakhan-Joseph almost made it a 2-0 game minutes later, but his header off a cross fell into the hands of Pilla for his only save of the match.

Fordham goalie Ryan Meara earned his first shutout of the season while grabbing one save.

The Rams will hit the road though will not stray too far from Rose Hill as they head to Manhattan College on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 PM.
