The 16th-ranked Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team posted a 5-1 win over UC-Colorado Springs on Friday evening at Mountain Lion Stadium. It was the fifth victory for the Orediggers in their last six games.
Jacob Juett scored his first goal of the season, a header off a corner kick, in the 16th minute of the match giving CSM a 1-0 lead. Alex Nass recorded the assist, his fourth of the season.
Chike Sullivan notched his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute on a deflection as Jeff Nelson tallied his fourth assist of the season.
CSM added to its lead in the 33rd minute of the match. After a Mines corner kick, Ted Decker controlled a loose ball and scored his fifth goal of the season.
The Mountain Lions scored just one minute and 16 seconds in the second half courtesy of a Matt Friesen goal, his eighth of the season.
Mines added two more goals both by Jeff Nelson in the second half. Nelson received a centering pass from Cale Haas for a goal in the 79th minute. The assist was Haas’ eighth of the season. In the 86th minute, Nelson then took advantage of a missed clear by the UCCS goalkeeper and intercepted the clear for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Manville Strand earned the win in goal as he made five saves while facing 13 shots during the match.
The Orediggers (12-2-3, 8-2-1 RMAC) will host CSU-Pueblo on Sunday, Oct. 25th. CSM will play at #25 Metro State on Friday, Oct. 30th at 3:30 pm. Mines will close out the 2009 regular season at home against Regis University on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 pm.
