Andy Gordon’s goal in the 89th minute gave Martin Methodist a 3-2 victory over Cumberland in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at the CU Soccer Field.
Midfielder Robert Boyd put the Bulldogs on the board in the 18th minute on a free kick from 20 yards out, a well placed shot sent over MMC’s defensive wall into the top of the net. Nathan Gillespie scored on a beautiful header from Boyd’s corner kick in the 35th minute.
Cumberland (3-8-0, 0-3-0) kept the Redhawks at bay with outstanding goal keeping from Gubby John-Williams, who had seven saves on the day, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime after Martin Methodist’s Fabio Souza placed a shot from 30 yards out into the back of the net in the 41st minute.
MMC keeper James Colman had four saves on four shots in the second half to keep the RedHawks’ (6-3-2, 3-2-0) hopes alive.
Anthony Hewitt tied the match at two on a shot from the right side of the box late in the 88th minute. Less than a minute later, Gordon blasted a header past John-Williams from six yards out to give the Redhawks the lead and victory on the day.
Cumberland travels to Dayton, Tenn., to take on 13th-ranked Bryan College this Wednesday before returning home to take on Mid-Continent in a TranSouth Conference match next Saturday at 1 p.m.
