The #1-ranked Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit to come out on top with a 2-1 victory in overtime against #24 Metro State on Friday afternoon in RMAC men's soccer action at Auraria Field.
In the 18th minute of the match, Metro State took the lead as David Toler passed off to Steven Emory who found Scott Grode for his 10th goal of the season. The goal marked the first time that Mines has trailed in a match all season.
Alex Gunberg ripped a shot in the 21st minute but Metro State goalkeeper Issa Bissau came up with a save. Cale Haas put a shot on goal in the 40th minute but CSM was once again denied by Bissau and trailed 1-0 at the half. Mines held a 12-5 advantage in shots in the first half of play.
Mines would even the score in the 70th minute drawing a penalty kick. Chike Sullivan converted for his eighth goal of the season.
The CSM defense came up with a save in the 74th minute off the Steven Emory header to preserve the tie. Sullivan put a shot on target in the 86th minute but was unable to connect. Manville Strand came up with the save on a shot by Walter Bertini in the 87th minute.
The Orediggers had three consecutive corner kicks within a 50 second span in the 88th minute but were unable to score sending the match into overtime. The second overtime match of the season between the two teams the last which ended in a 0-0 tie in Golden, Colo.
The Roadrunners had chance in the 95th minute as a header by Grode missed wide and Metro State followed up with a corner kick in the 96th minute.
Mines intercepted the ball and Sullivan sent a cross into the box finding the head of Tesho Akindele for the game-winner in the 96th minute to give Mines a 2-1 victory. The goal was Akindele's 16th of the season and the assist was Sullivan's 10th of the season.
The #1-ranked Orediggers (14-0-1, 11-0-1 RMAC) host #10 Regis University on Senior Day, Sunday, Oct. 24th at 1:30 pm.
