The LSU Shreveport men's soccer team took down the Bacone College Warriors on Saturday afternoon in a tough match at the Swamp that saw a total of 22 fouls and seven yellow cards and had players lying on the field in exhaustion when the horn sounded. The Pilots prevailed by a final score of 2-1.
The Pilots got on the board first as Leonardo Reyes, the team's leading scorer, headed one in at the 26th minute to give LSUS the early lead and one goal advantage at the half, 1-0.
LSUS' Larry Edwards gave the Pilots a two goal cushion thanks the perfect pass from Steven Bush to set up the play in the 59th minute of the contest. Edwards scored his third goal of the year while Bush received his third assist on the play.
Bacone came back to score in 67th minute as Jose Roque chipped into the Pilot's lead and cut it to 2-1 with 23 minutes to go. Both teams fought hard and played until the bitter end but the Pilots came out on top to keep the Conference Championship hopes alive.
"This was a very tough game today; both teams gave it their all. You have to give Bacone credit, they are much better than their overall record says they are. I am proud of the way we came together and got the job done," said LSUS head coach Krasi Kolarov.
With the win, the Pilots remain in sole possession of second place in the RRAC standings as they trail Texas-Brownsville by one game.
The Pilots have a chance to take over the top spot in the conference in their next game, Thursday Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. versus the University of Texas-Brownsville (11-3-1, 7-0 RRAC) at the Swamp. UTB has now won nine games in a row after the 6-0 win over SAGU on Saturday.
"This is going to be a tough game but we have put ourselves in the position that if we win out in conference then we take the regular season title. Our destiny is in our own hands and that is the way we want it. We have got to win these next two games for the Championship, so next week is HUGE," said Kolarov.
