Mid-Continent University (8-9-1, 5-2 TSAC) clinched the number two seed and first-round bye for the upcoming TranSouth Athletics Conference Championships with a 2-1 victory over Freed-Hardeman University (12-4-0, 3-3 TSAC) in Saturday, October 30 collegiate men's soccer action at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee. MCU scored both of its goals in a span of 4 minutes, 32 seconds in the first half.
Mid-Continent outshot Freed-Hardeman, 12-3, and led 4-1 in corner kicks in the first half, but most importantly scored a pair of goals for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Jan Chvojan (Plzen, Czech Republic), pictured above on the right, netted his second goal of the season at the 28:43 mark with junior forward Mauricio Da Silva (Porto Alegre, Brazil) earning his fourth assist, and then just over four minutes later freshman forward Keagan Bacchus (Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago), pictured on the left, tallied his sixth goal of the season unassisted at 33:15.
The Cougars withstood a furious FHU rally in the second half. The Lions outshot MCU, 12-7, in the final 45 minutes, and MCU's freshman goalkeeper Adam Lewis (Edinburgh, Scotland), pictured on the right, proved up to the challenge, saving four shots on goal in the half and five for the match. Freed-Hardeman's Philipp Baier scored his fourth goal of the season unassisted at the 83:00-minute mark, slicing MCU's lead to 2-1, but the Lions managed just one shot on goal in the final seven minutes. FHU goalkeeper Alexandre Girodo saved four MCU shots on goal in the match.
Da Silva and Bacchus led MCU with 5 and 4 shots respectively, with three of Bacchus targeted on goal.
