Wayland Baptist's Jevaughn Vance scored his fourth goal of the season just a minute and a half into the opening period and the Pioneers held on to get a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Eastern New Mexico University on Monday afternoon. It was the third time in the last five games that the Pioneer men have played past the 100 minute mark.
Vance's goal came after the freshman from Trinidad & Tobago beat a defender and dribbled down the left side. The Greyhounds, who remained undefeated with a 4-0-2 record, wasted little time in getting the equalizer when Buosi Luiz picked up a rebound in front of the net for the unassisted goal.
Pioneer freshman goalkeeper John-Ramses Thomas made ten saves over the next 105 minutes to help preserve the tie. The young Pioneers are now 3-3-2 on the season and have allowed just three goals in the past five games.
Eastern held the edge in total shots, 18-11. Wayland put four of those shots on goal, one in the first, two in the second, and one in the first overtime period.
Jamath Shoffner, the Pioneer's first-year head coach, said afterwards that he was proud of his team's effort, particularly since ENMU was 17th in last week's NCAA Division II rankings.
"We had numerous chances to seal the game, but couldn't put our chances away. We need to build off the effort going into conference games."
WBU has nine days off before the start of Sooner Athletic Conference action on Sept. 29 at Rogers State.
