Cumberland’s Robert Als was named the TranSouth Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over Union University last Saturday.
The senior from San Fernando, Trinidad, assisted on Harry Mason’s goal, the final score of the match, in the 86th minute in a 4-2 win over Freed-Hardeman last Tuesday.
Then in Saturday’s quarterfinals of the TranSouth Championships, the 5-foot-9 midfielder assisted on Nathan Gillespie’s tying score in the 40th minute before taking a pass from Mason and beating the keeper top shelf four minutes into overtime for the golden goal.
It was the first goal of the season for Als and the 10th of his four-year Bulldog career. With Saturday’s victory, Cumberland travels to McKenzie, Tenn., on Tuesday to face eighth-ranked Bethel University in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
