Kenwyne Jones vs HondurasKENWYNE Jones has matched a little-known record after bagging three goals in two internationals over the past week.

His strikes against the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia swelled his total for Trinidad & Tobago to eight in all while at Stoke.

And that equals the record for most international goals by a player while employed by Stoke.

He now stands on a par with Sir Stanley Matthews and Freddie Steele after their pre-war exploits in an England shirt while still on the Stoke payroll.

Sir Stan's goals came in the period 1934-38 against Wales (in three different matches), Czechoslovakia (a hat-trick), Germany and Northern Ireland.

Steele, who many still regard as Stoke's all-time goalscorer ahead of John Ritchie because of his wartime goals, went through a purple patch for his country by scoring eight in six internationals in the period 1937-38 before the Second World War interrupted his scoring frenzy.

Jones, meanwhile, has bagged his eight while a Stoke player since August 2011 against Bermuda, Guyana (in two different games), El Salvador, Honduras, UAE and Saudi Arabia (two goals).

However, there is an argument for saying Jones has already broken the record by scoring nine while a Stoke player.

James Knowles, who kindly provided the statistics, points out that his first international goal came on May 25, 2005 against Bermuda.

As Jones was on loan at Stoke from Southampton until the end of the preceding season, a temporary contract that may have still been technically in force by May 25, you could say he was a Stoke player then as well.

As for pretenders to the crown Jones may or may not be wearing at present, Jon Walters isn't a million miles away after scoring four for the Republic of Ireland against the Faroe Islands, Estonia and Austria (2).
