Cornell Glen vs Tata Football AcademyShillong Lajong’s much anticipated and celebrated marquee signing Cornell Glen arrived in Shillong on the 16th August 2013, and have since then been training with the first team for the country’s top football competition, the I-League season which kick-started on the 22nd of August.  Glen is the only World Cupper in the 2013-14 season and the highly experienced goal scoring machine was seen making an impact when he took to the field with his new team.

In a recent chat with the Club’s Media Manager, Glen spoke at length regarding his career, his highlights and his move to India and Shillong Lajong.

India has always been known as the sleeping giant of the most beautiful game, but it can be said that the popularity of the game is picking up at a rapid pace. When asked about his maiden visit to the most diverse country in the world, Glen replies, “My maiden trip to India has been a culture shock for me. However, I am hopeful that I will enjoy the sights and sounds that India has to offer.” He further said that he wishes to see Indian football progress to greater heights and making the decision to come to the I-league was ‘a great opportunity’ for him to be a part of the whole process.

A gifted centre forward who has scored 23 goals for the Trinidad and Tobago national team, Glen said that the recently concluded CONCACAF Gold Cup, which was held in the United States was a great achievement, both for him and his country and that donning the national colours will always be something that will be cherished by him.

So why did Glen choose Shillong Lajong? Well, his intentions are clear- he has undoubtedly heard a lot about the Northeastern Club – one of the most popular Clubs in India, and he has no doubts about the Club’s abilities and is, in fact, looking forward to having a great first season with the Reds. “Lajong is indeed a great football Club in the making,” he comments. “My aim is to have a good season and play as many games as I can and stay fit. As a player it is not good to promise trophies or wins but I will give my hundred percent and try to win games and trophies and I am confident what I can do and bring for the club,” he further comments assuredly.

Glen has had an extensive playing career which has seen him plying his trade in Portugal, his home country and the United States as well. His career blossomed while playing in the Major League Soccer (MLS), the top rung league in the United States. He started his MLS career with Metrostars, before being drafted to FC Dallas for the next season. His final season saw him being signed by LA Galaxy, who already had an array of stars in their roster.

Taking his mind back to the MLS, Glen fondly reminisced that his two goals for LA Galaxy (on his debut) in the Super Clasico derby against Chivas USA was the greatest memory from his time in the league.

Always having a penchant for perfection and precision, Glen laid out his plan with Shillong Lajong and said that his aim was to score as many goals as possible for the Reds, but was quick to point out that every game begins with zero and the key would be to stay fit; his ultimate objective being helping the team to move forward.

Visibly excited at the prospect of playing in front of an always supportive home crowd Glen also had a word for the ‘Lajong faithfuls.’ “I have heard many things about Shillong Lajong fans. The Club has a big support from the fans and they come to watch the games in large numbers. Hence, this motivates me to perform harder and I am very excited. I hope they come and support the team in every game. I will try to make them proud,” he expresses.

The arrival of Cornell Glen who is well known for his attacking skills is certainly a joy for the team and supporters as he sets the I-League alight with his on-field performances and experience in front of goal.
