Ramsgate have appointed former Burnley and Gillingham defender Ian Cox as their head coach.

The 44-year-old, who won 16 caps for Trinidad & Tobago and was part of their 2006 World Cup squad, has linked up with managers Jim and Danny Ward and was involved in Saturday's opening pre-season training session.

Since leaving the pro game, he has played for Maidstone United and Whitstable Town, and is now charged with helping the Rams as they look for a successful season in Ryman League Division One South.

Jim Ward said: "He's working down this way, I know him and he's pleased to be on board. He brings a lot to the party, he's played for Palace, Gillingham, he played in the World Cup, didn't he?

"He's got experience, he's a good lad to have around the place, another good signing."

The Rams also confirmed two more summer signings on Saturday as midfielder Peter Smith signed on from Sittingbourne along with former Maidstone United and Met Police centre-back Nick Humphrey.

"We made two more big signings on Saturday," Ward added. "Humphrey has been at Maidstone, where he got promoted to the Ryman Premier and then he won the league with Met Police, so he's got a great pedigree. He's still only 32. He'll be my centre-half.

"Smith has come from Sittingbourne, he's a good player. He's a good football player.

"Me and Danny have got to sit and watch the game on a Saturday, I don't want to watch people lumping the ball up the pitch, we never have done.

"We've signed a lot of crowd pleasers, Loynes, Taylor and Pulman especially, and the right-back, McKenzie, he gets his head down and likes to run with the ball and create chances.

"We've signed a lot of players like that, but to have the chance to do that you've got to have the backbone. We think we're ok."
