National defender Daneil Cyrus made his starting debut for Chicago Fire in a 3-2 loss to New York Red Bulls in American MLS action on Friday night.

Having waited just under a month due to a work permit delay, Cyrus put on a solid showing, playing the entire match and also receiving a 74th minute booking. T&T midfielder Joevin Jones also played the full match.

Fire coach Frank Yallop said he was looking forward to having Cyrus in his team on a regular basis

“Absolutely, we signed them to play them,” Yallop told reporters this week when asked if he sees teammate Ty Harden and Cyrus seeing much game time in the final seven games.

“Ty has been unlucky with his hamstring injury but he looks 100 percent now, and Cyrus is another kid that had a good Gold Cup. He’s been training but not 100 percent with his [international] squad, he just played a game and did OK in the game,” Yallop said. “They’re going to come into it and be featured, whether it’s Friday or moving forward, but we’ll figure out what’s good for them.”

Cyrus said he was keen to play as much as possible before the season ends.

“It was a bit frustrating not being able to play because of the work permit but I think I did okay in my first match.

I’ve been in the MLS before but now it’s a new environment.

I’ve been to Chicago before because I was here with the national team for the Gold Cup and it’s great being here with Joevin (Jones) who I consider to be a brother.

Hopefully we can both stay injury free and help the team finish the season on a high note,” Cyrus said.

Both Jones and Cyrus are expected to be back in the national team for the October 8 friendly away to Panama and then for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Guatemala City on November 13 and United States in Port of Spain on November 17.
