Kenwyne Jones of Cardiff stabs the ball home for the second goal

Cardiff City goal hero Kenwyne Jones has spoken out over his future with the Bluebirds.

And the former Sunderland and Southampton striker has insisted he's putting talk of a new contract to one side for now as he concentrates on pushing Russell Slade's men towards the play-offs.

WalesOnline revealed on Tuesday that Cardiff's hierarchy are keen to pen Jones to a fresh deal, albeit on a reduced wage, but the Trinidadian, who scored Cardiff's late winner in the 3-2 win over Brentford, said: “Right now club promotion is everyone's primary focus.

“I'm really just enjoying my time here at Cardiff with Russell Slade and the lads.”

Jones, who joined Cardiff from Stoke in January 2014 in a swap deal that saw Peter Odemwingie move in the opposite direction, is easily the highest paid player at the club with a basic pay-packet of £35,000 a week.

As was shown by his winner against the Bees, he remains Slade's best available goalscorer and is clearly enjoying teaming up with new strike partner Tony Watt.

Cardiff are keen to sign Charlton loanee Watt on a permanent deal to continue what has proved a promising partnership with Jones.

“With Tony Watt now in the mix it's been a good experience working day by day to get the job done,” Jones added.

“The fans continue to be fantastic and of course that support drives the team to want to finish well.”

Slade and Cardiff certainly had Jones to thank on Tuesday after he rescued the Bluebirds from the near embarrassment of throwing away yet another two-goal lead.

First-half efforts from Jones and Watt had put Slade's men in control before Brentford hit back after the interval.

For the third consecutive home game it looked as if Cardiff would have to settle for a point before Jones struck late on.

His cool 94th minute strike secured a 3-2 victory and three vital home points.

“In the second-half Brentford came out with a vengeance and we needed to hold the fort when it mattered most,” Jones added.

“They applied the pressure but the boys never lost faith. Fabio presented an excellent opportunity down the left in those last few minutes and I was able to connect and find the net.”

After victory over Brentford, Cardiff face a short turnaround before they make the trip to Birmingham on Friday evening where Slade will hope Jones and Watt continue what is already proving to be a fruitful partnership.
