GILLINGHAM 3 SWANSEA CITY 1

A double from Ian Cox has capped a dominant Gillingham display to take its winning streak to three matches.

The Trinidad and Tobago central defender scored on either side of half time to make it nine points for the week for the Gills, and move them well clear of the bottom three.

The Gills headed into the match with plenty of confidence on the back of two successive victories, and looked a class above the team sitting 12 spots above them for most of the opening half.

The Swans did have the first opening of the match as Amankwaah created space on the right hand side after a neat 1-2 with Leon Britton, before failing to pick out anyone in the box with his ball in. On six minutes Danny Jackman sent a ball in towards the box from the left wing, rebounding off Matty Jarvis and sitting up for Clint Easton, Tuesday's goalscorer this time shooting across the face of goal.

Gary Mulligan made a run down the right side on nine minutes and was unable to find Michael Flynn in the box, with a shot also possibly on, while five minutes later the Gills gained the advantage.

Good lead up work by Matty Jarvis won the Gills a corner which Easton played short to Jackman on the left, his cross falling for Ian Cox with room to move in the right channel, doing well to slot it past Willy Gueret into the bottom right hand corner.

The home side continued to push forward and could have had a second on 19 minutes, when another corner in from the left from Easton somehow managed to evade everyone in the box and find Michael Flynn on the right edge, the skipper laying off for Duncan Jupp who found Gary Mulligan, the striker's header aimed straight at the keeper.

The Swans were having no luck on the break and Andy Robinson blazed over the bar from distance on 28 minutes, his side was to be playing from even further behind two minutes later.

Michael Flynn and Matty Jarvis have shown all season how well they work together, and it was their combination on show again, the skipper unleashing Jarvis, who's trademark pace was too much for Izzy Iriekpin, turning around the defender on the right hand side, and burying it in the top left hand corner.

The ascendancy was well and truly with the home side, as Mulligan had a shot well saved by Gueret after a Mark Bentley ball was brought down by Jarvis, while Gueret had to be alert to make a brilliant save diving to his right to deny Clint Easton from a set piece, after Andrew Crofts was brought down on the edge of the area.

Swansea had what could go down as their best chance of the match right on half time, when Lawrence got to a free kick from Robinson in from the left, only to put his header past the left post.

Three minutes after the restart the Gills had Gueret under pressure again, as Easton turned inside Amankwaah and shot on the half volley narrowly over the bar.

Jarvis could have had a double on 52 minutes when he found himself one on one with Gueret after being put through by Bentley, only to blaze over, while Gary Mulligan had a strong appeal for a penalty waved away afetr tussling with Amaknkwaah inside the area.

Kenny Jackett made a triple substitution for the visitors on 55 minutes, and his side had its own appeals for a penalty denied by Mr Woolmer a couple of minutes later, while Jarvis was busy at the other end again, forcing Gueret into a low save with his legs after beating Lawrence.

Swansea were desperately unlucky not to have pegged one back on 68 minutes, as Thomas Butler crossed in from the left to find Ade Akinfenwa, the one time Gills target shooting onto the right hand post after beating Flinders.

The result was put beyond any doubt on 79 minutes, when the Swans defence failed to deal with a corner in from Easton, Matty Jarvis' over-head back into the box headed down by Crofts and falling at the feet of Cox, who made it two for the afternoon, into the bottom left corner from 10 yards.

With five minutes left of normal time the visitors did manage a consolation goal, as Scott Flinders made a brilliant first up save one handed to deny Knight, but the ball fell back into his path and he slotted home.

Jarvis should have made it four for the Giolls at the death, after a lovely one-two with Crofts had him one on one with Gueret 10 yards out, his shot beating the 'keeper but cannoning into the far post. It mattered little however, as the Gills made it three from three and continued their rise up the league one table.
