Englishman George Summerside, a life long fan of Sunderland, presented a replica Carlos Edwards jersey to Edwards’ alma matta, St Anthony’s College recently. Summerside and his wife Yvonne are in the Caribbean following the England cricket team on its tour of the West Indies.

On his many travels watching cricket, Summerside likes to promote his club to the locals in countries such as Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan and has exchanged uniforms and strips on many occassions. Summerside said, “Most countries have only heard of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, so I have to spend a lot of time explaining to them about Sunderland. But here in T&T it’s no problem. Dwight Yorke, Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards are all Sunderland players.”

Before coming to the region, Summerside approached Sunderland and club owner Niall Quinn was only too willing to provide uniforms and strips and photographs for him to take to T&T, and what better place to deliver them than the college where Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards were educated, St Anthony’s College.

Co-incidentally George’s older daughter Ashleigh, 25, is a geography teacher at St Anthony’s School in Sunderland. His other daughter Paula, 21, graduates in June of this year with a degree in Politics and Media.
