Dennis Lawrence admitted playing in a protective mask was not 'too comfortable' but the Trinidad and Tobago International was delighted to help Crewe record another away win at Colchester United.
The vastly experienced defender though has warned about any complacency creeping in as Crewe moved six points above the drop zone.
After our 1-0 win in Colchester, Lawrence told crewealex.net: "There's no way we can afford to take our foot off the gas at this point in the season. It's still not going to be easy and we've got to keep going.
"We can't be carried away as there is still a long way to go and we are still seeing all kinds of results.
"Wearing the mask had to be done. It wasn't the most comfortable but the doctors know best and I understood the reason for it. It has to protect the face and if I hadn't had worn it then I would have been out for at least another two weeks.
"It was a bit uncomfortable but the opportunity was there to wear the mask and play and I had to do it.
Dennis added: "If there's something I can do to be involved I'll take the chance. To come back and help get a result for the team was good."
