The victory against Coventry City on Tuesday night was a deserved one and I actually thought we played some decent football.

Despite a lot of neat interplay though, we were once again wasteful in the final third and it took a tremendous strike from Jamie McAllister to open up the Sky Blues defence. We have to be more clinical in front of goal and the strikers need to start firing.

I'm writing this before the Cardiff City match, which looked almost certain to have Stern John involved somehow. I have to admit that I just don't see it with Stern. I try and give every player who pulls on the City shirt a chance but for me Stern just isn't doing enough to warrant a starting position or even come to that a place on the bench. I can't see what he has done that warrants a place in the side that Peter Styvar, Lee Trundle or John Akinde hasn't.

Gary has appealed to the fans to give John a chance saying the Trinidad & Tobago's languid demeanour can be misleading and that he shouldn't be made a scapegoat.

John has said he is determined to earn a City deal but if I were in charge I would be saying thanks but no thanks. John's slow walk off the pitch on Tuesday night with the score at 0-0 was disappointing to say the least.

Now as often happens there is every chance that I am talking about the taste of humble pie in this column next week and I truly hope I am and that Stern shows me what Gary Johnson and others see.

City have seven games left and some are against other teams in and around the play offs in Preston, Ipswich, Swansea and Burnley and wins in those games are also key.

I would still like to see City bolster the squad with a loan signing up front. Reading have added to their options up front with the signing of Dave Kitson from Stoke City, Ipswich Town have signed Giovani dos Santos from Spurs and a struggling Nottingham Forest side have been able to sign Gary McSheffery on loan.

If City are serious about the play offs they need a consistent goal scorer, as the saying goes you have to speculate to accumulate.
