TORQUAY United have agreed terms with Southampton for winger Jake Thomson to extend his loan to a second month.

Gulls manager Paul Buckle revealed after Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by promotion chasing Rotherham United that the pacy Saints starlet will stay at Plainmoor when his first month's loan runs out later this week.

"Jake will stay for another month," said Buckle, in the wake of a result which was hardly deserved but ended United's seven-match unbeaten run in League Two.

The news will not only boost a squad already strengthened by the arrivals of Chris Zebroski and 18-year-old Spurs defender Adam Smith on loan.

But with injuries and suspensions starting to cut Buckle's margins fine, United could hardly afford to lose another player at this stage.

Smith, who played at left-back in place of Kevin Nicholson, had a hugely impressive debut.

His initial loan lasts for 28 days, but Buckle added: "If he does well, we would like to keep him.

"Spurs have a policy where they want their players to go out and play matches, not just fill squad places.

"The last thing I want to do is get someone in for a short time, and upset players who have done well for us over several years."

In other words, United are almost certain to ask Spurs, where they have good contacts, if they can extend Smith's loan too when the time comes.

"Adam can strike the ball with two feet, and he's got a fine attitude – very much the right mentality," said Buckle.

Zebroski also played well on his return to the club – United and Wycombe have already agreed a fee for a permanent transfer when the 'window' reopens in January.

But the Gulls, despite dominating for most of the match, eventually fell to two late goals, by Kevin Ellison in the 85th minute and Adam Le Fondre in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Skipper Chris Hargreaves, who was sidelined by a back injury on Saturday, could well be back in contention for tomorrow night's trip to the Potteries to take on Port Vale.

But centre-back Kieran Charnock will again be missing – he is serving the second of a three-match suspension.

"We will play a lot worse and win," said Buckle after the Rotherham defeat. "I feel for the players and the supporters.

"But you have got to put the ball in the net.

"When you don't do that, the game comes back to kick you.

"We've got to be more clinical in front of goal."
