Central FC kicked off their fourth annual Give Breast Cancer The Boot tournament with a media launch at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday.
Central FC Managing Director and Former Soca Warrior Brent Sancho expressed how important this tournament is to the club and how proud they are to be a part of it.
“The Republic Bank give Breast Cancer the Boot is possibly the most important venture for us and we are proud to partner VF Ladies in putting on the fourth edition of this tournament,” he stated.
“We are proud to be a small part in a huge fight against cancer and we are truly humbled that we have been able to have support of players, coaches, survivors of the disease, well wishers, sponsors and the people from Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society,” he continued.
Sancho explained that it is easy for a professional football club to get caught up in the on-the-field demands, the basic desire to compete and the love of winning.
“The top football clubs around the world are seemingly judged by their on-the-field performances and achievements,” he pointed out.
He stressed that his club’s achievements so far on the pitch included being the winners of the 2013 First Citizens Cup, this year’s Lucozade Goal Shield and finishing second in the 2013-2014 T&T Pro League season.
“A major responsibility for any sporting organisation is its ability to enhance, develop and refine the people in its environs because sports goes where no politician, lawyers or any other person for that matter can go.” he explained.
He believes that this function of a sporting organisation is as important, or more than their on the field triumphs and that Central FC is on the forefront of developing football as a business and meshing it with a social identity.
Central FC has hosted a number events and gave their support to worthy causes such as Treat Her Like a Lady and their Christmas Toy Drive.
They also visit elderly homes and children from the various orphanages.
This years tournament will feature teams outside of Trinidad and Tobago and support from the Secondary Schools Football League.
The tournament starts at 9am at CIC grounds in St Clair and teams are asked to register early as possible as only 12 teams will be allowed to compete.
A cancer mobile unit would be on site and there will be a designated area for family and children.
