It started with the persistent selection of out-of-contract teenaged midfielder Khaleem Hyland and now, according to some coaches and observers, has spread like a cancer throughout the Trinidad and Tobago national football team's ranks.
Connection played their entire Lucozade Big Six competition without their best player and national captain Aurtis Whitley and Fevrier, a former Trinidad and Tobago coach, was stunned to pick up the Sunday Express and spot Whitley's name among the 20-man national squad for this week's Digicel Caribbean Cup finals in Jamaica.
"Whitley played for us against Joe Public and we have not seen him since," said the St Lucian. "I called him last week to find out why he was not training and he told me that his foot was swollen and he could hardly a walk on it.
"I could not believe it when I saw him in the national team."
There were similar grumbles at United Petrotrin recently as technical director Edgar Vidale expressed displeasure with another "Soca Warrior", Keon Daniel, who was supposedly turning up for matches and training sessions when he felt like it.
Petrotrin sacked Daniel last week but there is a growing feeling within the Pro League that the national selection policy is discouraging their best performers.
"Maturana and his coaches are spoiling these players," said one coach, who preferred to remain anonymous. "They are not helping the local game but spoiling it because they are showing these fellas that they can do anything and still get picked."
Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick has repeatedly voiced his displeasure with Maturana's team sheets. The "San Juan Kings" successfully defended their Pro League title on the weekend and have the youngest squad in the top flight but are rarely represented on the national stage.
Maturana takes three Jabloteh employees to Jamaica but, oddly, none of his picks command starting places for Fenwick.
Striker Cornell Glen features regularly for Jabloteh-albeit usually off the bench-but defender Karlon Murray lost his place to the 18-year-old pair of Robert Primus and Joel Russell, while 2006 World Cup player Cyd Gray was not used for the Big Six competition and is set to be released.
Fenwick insisted that his captain and central midfielder Trent Noel, striker Jerol Forbes, left back Noel Williams, right back Elton John and Primus merit call-ups at the very least.
"I think it is unbelievable that we did so well this season and yet they still leave our players out," said Fenwick. "They are not picking the right players."
Maturana's no-brainers:
Early in his tenure, T&T coach Maturana said that players would not be selected on the strength of past performances and ignored 2006 World Cup midfielder Chris Birchall and defender Brent Sancho because they were not representing their clubs.
But Maturana routinely picked promising 19-year-old midfielder Hyland, whose last competitive club fixture was in December 2007, while he admitted to calling up Lebanon-based forward Errol McFarlane Jr based on footage of his performances filmed a year and a half ago.
Here are a few of Maturana's controversial selections:
Anthony Warner (Hull)
The 34-year-old goalkeeper has not played competitive football since February and is third choice at England Premiership club Hull City. Maturana, despite using three goalkeepers already this year, wanted to see Warner close up so he flew him in for last month's World Cup qualifier Cuba and sat next to him on the bench.
He described Warner as "a great player".
Akeem Adams (Presentation College, Chaguanas)
The 17-year-old Adams never played professionally for W. Connection but was drafted into Maturana's full squad and gave a decent account in his two senior caps before being cut. Connection remain unconvinced as Adams has still not been added to their professional roster.
Gyasi Joyce (Caledonia)
The young right back was surprisingly selected as deputy to national right back Cyd Gray despite being second choice at his own club. But, when Gray was suspended and Joyce's big chance came, Maturana sent for England non-League utility player Silvio Spann instead on the recommendation of national defender Dennis Lawrence. Spann too was discarded after his lone qualifier against the United States.
Errol McFarlane Jr (Al Mabarrah)
The big target man played just 26 minutes and contributed one goal in Trinidad and Tobago's three 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches but Maturana was suitably impressed by the footage. Perhaps Sancho should whip out clips of his World Cup duel with Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic, just a year earlier.
Maturana seemed to miss the Gold Cup contribution of Jabloteh captain and the 2008 Pro League's most consistent performer Noel in that video.
