A double by Albert Dexter Thornhill and an item by wingback Aklie Ewards helped Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force to a 3-2 win over Suriname Defence Force in their opening Armed Forces Continental Football Championship in Paramaribo, Suriname on Saturday.

According to the Pro League club’s PRO Christopher Durity, Defence Force held a 3-0 advantage before conceding two late items against the hosts.

Assistant Coach Marvin Gordon was in charge for Saturday’s victory.

The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will be boosted ahead of their second and final group match against Canada with the arrival of Head Coach Ross Russell and striker Devorn Jorsling who joined the team on Sunday.

Both Coach Russell and forward Jorsling boasts confidence after helping Trinidad and Tobago Men’s Senior Team qualify for the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals after topping Group F with wins against St. Vincent and the Grenadines(Tuesday), Guyana(Thursday) and Haiti(Saturday).

Their focus will now turn to helping the TTDF past the group stage and into the next round of the Armed Forces Continental Football Championship.

In the other group Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador and the USA challenge each other.

The top two finishers out of the Continental Football Championship will represent the Americas at the Fifth Edition of the Military World Games scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 12 – 24 July, 2011.
