Defence Force footballers, the current TT Pro League leaders, are in Suriname for the 2010 Armed Forces Continental Football Championships.
The tournament, hosted by the Suriname Armed Forces in Paramaribo, began on Friday and runs until November 15.
Trinidad and Tobago joined the Armed Forces of Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, United States and hosts Suriname at the Military World Games qualifying tournament.
Two teams from the qualifiers will represent the Americas region at the fifth Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 12-24 next year.
The 18-member Trinidad and Tobago team are grouped with Suriname and Canada, while Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador and United States are in another group.
According to assistant Defence Force coach Marvin Gordon, “this tournament is one that we want to go and win because we want to qualify for the Military World Games.
“Also it’s a good tournament, preparing for the Digicel Pro Bowl this month and as we look towards Round Two of the league championship later this year.”
The TT Defence Force is a member of the 131-nation grouping of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) whose aim is to foster “friendship through sports” among the Armed Forces of the World.
Defence Force squad in Suriname includes captain Corey Rivers, goalkeepers Kevin Graham and Dillon Pierre, ace national striker Devon Jorsling, as well as Keston Williams, Rawle Fletcher, Devin Jordan, Michael Edwards, Kurt Williams, Kerry Joseph, Dexter Thornhill, Sean Narcis, Dexter Pacheco, Rondell Elcock, Aklie Edwards, Ronald St Louis, Richard Roy and Marvin Jones.
Ross Russell is the coach, while Gordon is his deputy. Malcolm Nedd is the manager and Mark Lewis is trainer.
