TWO quick-fire goals from striker Clevon McPhee in the final propelled his team Frontline outfit to be crowned 2-1 victors over Massy Finance and champions of this year’s Gillette Small Goal Football Competition which took place at the St Mary’s College (CIC) Grounds, St Clair, on Saturday.

Frontline played unbeaten throughout the tournament and, after conquering several skillful six-a- side teams on the “Mach 3” pitch, emerged winners by pocketing the hefty $10,000 top prize.

In the championship match, Massy Finance showed worth but were outpaced by a determined Frontline unit. McPhee and his teammates knocked the ball around comfortably and capitalised on intricate through balls in an effort to penetrate a tight but sometimes shaky Massy defence.

Just before half-time, McPhee continuously tried to find the back of the net and was duly rewarded for his efforts as he cut across the top of the penalty box from the left, striking home precisely with his right foot.

At the resumption of the second period, Frontline pushed for the brace and was quickly celebrating just after five minutes of play as McPhee netted up once more in fine style. Within the dying minutes however, Robert Alexis pulled one back for Massy Finance, drilling one down the centre evading all defenders. But, it was little too late as Frontline held on for the win and this year’s Championship trophy.

The eventual runners-up were still pleased with their credible finish as they also walked away with a cheque for $6,000.

And, for his 10 goals scored throughout the one-day competition, McPhee was awarded with the “Most Goals” title while McKesi Burne was adjudged the tournament’s “Most Valuable Player”.

In their respective semi-final clashes, Frontline drubbed Road Stars 6-1 with goals coming from McPhee (three), Noel Williams (two) and Jamal Antoine. Road Stars’ consolatory item was scored by former football freestyler, Jean Paul Aqui.

The other encounter saw Massy Finance get past UN FC 3-0 with Alexis bagging a pair and Denrick Eve slotting home one.
