AT THE final whistle today, one team, one community will be $50,000 richer and can boast of being the best team in the city of Port of Spain.
Group A table-toppers Macoya FC, who came off a 5-0 victory in the Round of 16 played Ranga (who scored over 20 goals thus far) in the first quarter-final. In this evenly matched encounter, spectators were definitely in for a treat, and at the final whistle the scores were locked at 2-2. Macoya FC unfortunately suffered their first defeat of the tournament when the lost 3-2 from the penalty spot.
Game Two however, wasn’t as evenly balanced, as Champion Boys scored three unanswered goals past DMO, securing their spot in the semi-final.
On Saturday night more competitive matches were on show when all four teams accompanied with their supporters came out to edge their way closer to the first prize.
The hundreds of people gathered were entertained to a keenly contested first game, and it was Los Jefes that booked the third semi-final spot with a 2-1 victory over PFA The final place in the semi-final round went to the unbeaten Frontline when they continued to demonstrate their scoring prowess when they defeated Mango Rose 2-1.
In closing of the weekend’s action, the crowd was well engaged as a number of local celebrities came out to showcase their talents or lack thereof when WI Sports 7’s played Stag 7’s.
The strike pair of former national players Stern John and Maylee Attin-Johnson wasn’t enough fire power as they were outscored by Stag 7’s.
Despite two well-taken strikes by Attin-Johnson to take the lead over Stag 7’s, they both teams went into the half time interval with two goals each. The Stag team featured the likes of popular radio dj’s and soca artistes like Jason Williams, 2016 international Soca Monarch Champion ‘Voice’, and it seemed that the half-time team talk favoured the Stag team because they came out on a rampage in the second half, putting three past WI Sports goalie as the score eventually ended 5-2.
Last night, both semi-final games were to be contested, with Ranga versus Los Jefes and Champion Boys against Frontline.
