Take That and Cool It booted SP Boys out of the “Big 8” on Saturday to take the first real step in the defence of their Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Football League knockout title.
The reigning champions scraped into the “Big 8” as they eighth seed but had little trouble dispatching the upstarts who had topped the league phase which carried a $1,000 prize and the Raffie “Morock” Mohammed trophy.
“Cool It” have bigger aspirations through with $30,000 up for grabs in the knockout competition and had little trouble against their youthful rivals, though. They took control of the game with three first half goals for a 3-1 lead at the break. They went on to win 4-2 to book their spot in the semi-finals where they will face Dragon FC in two weeks time.
Dragon got past former champs G Madrid 2-1 on Sunday in the other quarter-final in a close encounter. After a goalless but exciting first half, the game exploded into life with Jevon Vincent firing Dragon ahead. And it was soon 2-0 courtesy a goal from Christian Maloney. G Madrid pulled on back from an own goal but they could not find the equaliser as time expired.
Quarter-final action continues this weekend with Dream Team facing Boys Town in a rematch of the 2013 final at 3.15pm on Saturday, while Manzan FC take on Gremio on Sunday at 3.15pm.
