Perennial powerhouse, Mayaro Spurs was booted out in the first round of the knockout in the Senior Division of the 2009 bpTT Mayaro Football League on Monday.

Mafeking United, which placed sixth in the league competition, overwhelmed fourth placed Spurs 6-0 to move on to the second round of the competition. Leroy Jones was the hero for the Mafeking outfit, scoring a beavertrick to send Spurs packing. Jones scored twice in the first half, as Mafeking led 3-0. The other item come from an own goal.

Spurs was under relentless pressure in the second half, with Curtis Nanan extending Mafeking’s lead in the 40th minute. Jones completed his hattrick five minutes later and slammed in his fourth on the hour mark. Ozone ran out a 2-1 winner over Warriors on Tuesday with Marvin Brown and Colin Clark scoring.

Action in the first round continues on Monday with league champion Illusion going for the double when it faces St Ann’s, which ended up in the bottom half of the league standings. Mayaro Boys take on MCTV Grand Lagoon on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mayaro Boys ended up as runners-up in the league competition when it edged Ozone 2-1 in a postponed match. The Boys, who owed their victory to Ian Edwards and an own goal, finished the competition with 25 points, trailing champions llusion by three points.
