Carlon Hughes secured a hat-trick and a fourth goal in two matches to guide National Super League hopeful, Guayaguayare of the Eastern Counties Football Association to a 5–1 beatdown of Point Fortin Civic Centre, in round two of the Champion of Champions competition, yesterday.

The match was staged at the Guayaguayare Recreation Ground, with the host securing a second victory in as many matches. In contrast, Point Fortin, south league winner, suffered its second straight defeat in the qualifying competition.


Hughes opened in the third minute, before completing the hat-trick in the 54th. Ryan Stewart and Earlon Thomas finished the job with a goal each in the 67th and 75th minute.

Matthew Bartholomew an equaliser for Point Fortin in the 28th minute, but it was followed less than a minute later by Hughes’ second effort.

Two other matches were played last night, but were completed after press time. Bethel United and St Francois Nationals, both of which suffered first round losses, were in action against each other, while Malabar FC and Enterprise Youths played in the late fixture. The latter two teams won their opening matches.
