National coach Stephen Hart and TTFA secretary Sheldon Phillips witnessed first hand the appetite and love for football in Guayaguayare last Sunday.
The duo attended the TTFA Super League encounter between home side Guaya United and North rivals Westside Superstarz. But aside from some of the talent on display on the field of play, the interest in the game was most notable as cars lined the main road and driveway to the Guayaguayare Recreation Ground.
There were roughly 1,100 spectators, some sitting in the pavilion and hundreds more lining the field with others cheering on from the hill behind the southern goal. A music band with horns blaring and drums rolling created a real lively atmosphere similar to the Intercol glory days of the past.
Food stalls offering tasty fish broth, corn soup and other sumptuous local delicacies made the event a lovely Sunday evening outing for the locals. The ingredients were enough to spur on the home-side to a convincing 4-2 victory over Westside.
“The event was a very encouraging one from our standpoint,” said Phillips.
“It has a great model and community football has to be the future of national football. When you look at what was on offer here today from a spectator and a commercial standpoint, it’s certainly impressive.
“I made the journey from Port-of-Spain and if I were just a fan looking for a good outing, I would definitely return. We are hoping to encourage this in all the communities to ensure the football is alive and the people enjoy being a part of it,” Phillips added.
Super League officials said the support for the games and teams in some of the other communities such as Siparia, Maracas, Stokelyvale and Malabar among other areas have also been very encouraging after four rounds of games this season.
