Community based team, Real Maracas, of Royal Road, is well on course to achieving its goal of playing in the bMobile National Super League next season.
The Maracas Boys, who are unbeaten after nine matches in the Emerald Apartments and Plaza Eastern Football Association league series, copped the FA Trophy on Sunday by whipping Malabar FC 1-0 at Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya. The lone goal was scored in the 59th minute by striker Sherron Manswell.
It resulted from a long kick downfield by goalkeeper Barry Gonzalves which fell for Manswell, who lobbed the ball over the head of opposing ‘keeper Aaron Edwards.
For Real Maracas, it was the second time in its seven-year history that the club won the FA Trophy in the zone, its first success coming in 2007 when beating Malick Togertherness 3-0 in the final. In that year, Real Maracas qualified for the national FA competition but lost to Pro League side Clico San Juan Jabloteh after stopping Joe Public’s Super League outfit on penalties in the first round.
“The players have worked extremely hard in preparing for the final,” said Renee Lendore, the club’s manager, after the win. We have not lost a match in nine league outings and three to get to the final, “she added.
“Our main target is to get into the National Super League.” Real Maracas has also reached the semifinals of the League Cup where it can also be facing Malabar again. The club will be coming up against Carib in the league on Thursday.
