MEMBERS of the 1990 Strike Squad brought back memories to the people of Mayaro/Guayaguayare when they attended the closing of the Maguaya United Football Academy and Sports Club Football Clinic held recently.

The clinic, which was sponsored by NGC, attracted youths from Mayaro, Guayaguayare and Manzanilla. 80 participants under the age of 18 were enrolled in the clinic, which was conducted by licensed community coaches.

The objective of this clinic was to promote the development of football players in the Mayaro/Guayaguayare community, and provided the youths with a positive and constructive way to spend their leisure time. The clinic also provided leaders in the community with an opportunity to instill discipline and assist in the development of strong character in the youths of the community.

The TT Strike Squad members, including former captain Clayton Morris, Brian Williams, Hudson Charles, and Philbert Jones conducted the final coaching clinic.

NGC’s Derrick Ferrier, who played a major role in this group, was pleased to see the results of this clinic. Minister of Legal Affairs Peter Taylor also paid a special visit to the clinic, delivering a motivational speech to the youngsters.

Taylor came in the capacity as an honorary member of the Strike Squad.

The clinic, which ran for ten weeks, was sponsored by NGC as part of the CSR initiatives of the North Eastern Offshore (NEO) project, and provided a platform for Maguaya to deliver a football development programme in a much more organised and efficient manner.

According to Derrick, the level of participation by players and coaches was a direct result of the resources provided by NGC to motivate and foster growth and continuity of this project.

After the coaching session the Strike Squad faced-off against the “Mayaro United” football team in a friendly match, ending in a 2-2 draw. Other notable coaching sessions included Ex-Technical Director for the TTFF and National football coach Mohammad Isa, who conducted the coaching clinic on October 24.

National Under-20 captain Leston Paul who experienced the excitement of the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt shared his experience with participants of the Clinic.
