Latapy and YorkeThe Cancer Treatment Foundation (CTF) hopes to raise more than $125,000 from their Lara, Yorke, Latapy Cricket & Football Clinic hosted at the International School of Port of Spain (ISPS) yesterday.

This is according to one of the directors of the CTF and West Indies cricket aficionado Dr Nigel Camacho, who was overlooking the clinic yesterday at the Westmoorings school.

Camacho said the auction for the clinic was held at the CTF’s annual ball at the Hyatt Regency Hotel last October and was being attended by 50 youngsters, including ten young cancer survivors and two children from St Dominic’s Home.

This year’s CTF clinic, the second to be staged, was a bit different as Cancer Treatment Foundation chairman and former West Indies batting star Brian Lara received some assistance from retired professional football stars Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy.

’This annual clinic is actually a first of a kind because last year it was hosted by Brian Lara himself, but this is the first time we have actually had these three personalities-Lara, Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy-conduct the clinic together,’ stated Camacho.

He explained that the one-day event started from 9 a.m. and saw Lara, Latapy and Yorke dividing the groups among themselves, with the former Windies skipper taking charge of the cricket segment, while his two lifelong buddies took control of the football aspect, involving the demonstration of techniques, drills and scrimmages.

But the most important aspect of the clinic was what it aimed to achieve for its constituents, Camacho said.

’The funds, which will come from corporate as well as individual sponsors, will go directly towards those afflicted with this horrible disease, cancer,’ Camacho added.

’It is part of an ongoing process as we hold a number of events year-round and with the average cost of treatment of cancer standing at $100,000 plus (per person), it is a very expensive exercise.

’These kids are doing their part in raising money for people afflicted with cancer and the CTF will then play their role in assisting those in need.’
