Henry netted a double which aided in St Augustine Secondary copping the Shell/First Citizens Girls Intercol East Zone title at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima, yesterday. The Green Machine sealed a 3-1 victory on penalty kicks over Bishop’s Anstey East after the scores were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time.
It was an unfortunate outcome for the Bishop’s unit, which scored first, thanks to Jalene Sobers. She hit the back of the net in the 10th minute to give her team the lead. Her teammate Jaasiel Forde doubled that advantage six minutes later, to put Bishop’s ahead 2-0.
Henry featured next and she was able to place the ball past the Bishop’s keeper in the 27th from the penalty spot as “Gustine” battled to make a comeback. However the scores remained unchanged at 2-1, at the close of the first half.
On the resumption, neither team could find the net and Bishop’s looked set to pull off the win. That was until Henry came good once again and netted the lone goal of the session, levelling the scores at 2. There was no changes at the end of regulation and during extra time.
Penalties seperated the two teams with St Augustine connecting three compared to Bishop’s one.
The Gustine team now awaits the winner of the North Zone final between, Diego Martin Central and Bishop’s Anstey Port-of-Spain which is set for Sunday at 3.30 pm. On that day also, Signal Hill will challenge Mason Hall for the Tobago Intercol crown at the same time.
Crystal Toney led Mason Hall into the title match, notching four goals to guide her team to a 5-0 win. In the other semifinal, Avonell Loraine hit three items to see Signal Hill to victory, by the same margin.
In South semifinals, defending girls Intercol champion Fyzabad Secondary will meet Pleasantville Secondary after both claimed huge victories against San Fernando East and St Joseph’s Convent, respectively. Fyzabad scored a 7-0 win while Pleasantville eased to a 15-0 triumph.
