St Anthony’s coach Nigel Grovesnor is hoping for North Zone support as he calls for a “sea of red”, ahead of Tuesday’s national Intercol final to be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Coming off a hard-fought 2-1 win over Presentation San Fernando on Friday, Grovesnor said he expects the game to be even harder and wants the public to rally around them.
“I have never seen the team (Arima North) play, but they have reached the national finals. They must be respected.” he said.
Continuing his praise for their opponents, Grovenor said, “I know the Arima North coach, Peter Lewis and he is excellent, I expect them to come out to try to win the game. I will give them 100 percent respect.”
The St Anthony’s boss also paid glowing tribute to his team saying the success so far has been well-deserved, hard fought and very good for the boys and the school. However he said the pressure was building on the team. “It is not that the team is getting tired, but that other teams are coming out to try to beat us. We have become the team to beat and the pressure is on to remain on top,” he added.
When asked about St Anthony’s perennial success story in schools football, Grovesnor said it is as a result of heavy emphasis being placed on developing their junior teams, so as to maintain a high standard.
“We have focussed on developing the under-13s, under-14s and under-15s, so when they make the transition to the championship team they are ready,” said Grovesnor.
He said he is hoping for the support of not only the friends and family of the St Anthony’s players but also for North Zone football fans. He said it would be inspiring for the team to look up at the stands and see as many supporters as possible.
“The boys are working very hard and this game is not only for St Anthony’s, it is for the North Zone,” he continued.
The final will kick-off at 4pm and promises to be a thrilling clash between the North Zone and Big-5 champions; the “Westmoorings Tigers” and East Zone champs “Dial Dynamos” who made light work of Carapichaima in their semi-final clash last Thursday.
