For the third time this season, St Mary’s College has gone clear at the top of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) North Zone, in what has thus far been a keen battle for supremacy among three teams.

Also, for the first time this season, St Anthony’s has dropped into third spot. The Tigers were on a bye yesterday, while St Mary’s College capitalised with a comfortable 3-1 win over host Diego Martin North Secondary, while East Mucurapo crushed Malick Secondary 4-1.

At Diego Martin North ground, the host team’s leading scorer Josh Toussaint gave St Mary’s an early fright when he scored an equalising goal on the half-hour mark, cancelling Nathan Hart’s opener for the Saints in the tenth minute.

The second-half was a controlled effort for the visitors, and it took just ten minutes into the resumption for the eventual winner to take a 2-1 advantage courtesy of a headed goal from Aaron Noel. The match was then wrapped up, as St Mary’s stormed to a two-point lead at the top of the standings with a close-ranged Sebastien Carbal goal just minutes from the end.

St Mary’s, since losing to St Anthony’s (2-1) last month has gone on a creditable four-match unbeaten run, dropping points only in a 1-1 draw to East Mucurapo.

St Anthony’s has also lost and drawn one match this season, winning all others. However, East Mucurapo, which has been an improving team went into second spot thrashing bottom-of-the-table Malick at the Hasely Crawford Stadium’s training field.

The other match in the zone saw Fatima College eked out a win with an own goal in the final moments of the match against third-from-bottom QRC, which has now lost its fifth consecutive match.

In the East, reigning champion St Augustine eased past Trinity East 3-0 to remain unbeaten and en route to defending the zonal title.

Leading goalscorer Ricardo John added another effort to his tally with a lone goal, while Jordan Devonish and Triston Hodge got the others.

Tobago’s Speyside Secondary enjoyed the only win this match day via a 5-2 drubbing of bottom-placed Goodwood.

South leader Presentation College San Fernando was on a bye, while Shiva Boys which sat second before the start of the match day was relegated to third following a 1-0 loss to newly promoted Mayaro Secondary.

Moving into second was Naparima, which took a 2-0 win over Pleasantville. The Central Zone is on a break until Saturday. Matches will resume in all zones on Saturday.
