FOR THE sixth consecutive year, Presentation College in San Fernando will be hosting its memorial football tournament in recognition of several former students who have passed on.
Previously dubbed the “Jovon Alexander/ Garvin Bertrand Memorial”, this year’s event is now called “The Memorial” and kicks off at the school’s grounds on Saturday. The change of name sees the addition of the Kern Lewis XI to the school’s list of teams competing.
As is customary, organisers of this commemorative event will have teams comprising of former classmates and friends of Alexander, Bertrand and Lewis, who will all do battle in a round-robin format.
The trio Alexander, Bertrand and Lewis, were past pupils of Presentation College, San Fernando, who have all passed away.
The prestigious southern school lost Alexander in 2006 after he fell ill while he was writing his CXC exams, while Bertrand passed on after he was involved in a vehicular accident in 2008. Meanwhile Lewis, a former national youth footballer, departed in 2004 after he succumbed to meningitis.
All three gentlemen had a passion for football which makes the event a fitting tribute to remember them via the sport they all loved.
Organisers expect several former national footballers and College Championships standouts to participate as they have a arranged a heap of prizes on the evening, inclusive of the “Judgement Jam of the Day” (Best Tackle), “Supa G Beat of the Day” (Best Beats) and the “Bound2Score Goal of the Day” awards.
Also expected to be in attendance on Saturday will be several family members of all three gentlemen, as this makes it an even more special event since the organising committee will get to thank them for blessing the school with the presence of their sons.
This year, the event entails a special book drive to assist an impoverish community in Trinidad. Organisers have also paid special mention to Andre Benjamin who has been the engine behind this Memorial every year.
