Defending Tobago Zonal League champions Speyside High School opened the 2014 BG T&T National Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with a 3-0 victory over Bishop’s High School yesterday at Mt Gomery Recreational Ground.

Speyside played the opening match of a double-header, with Signal Hill Secondary clashing with Scarborough Secondary in the late match.

Because of travel issues, Tobago are not competing in the SSFL Premier League in Trinidad. However, later in the season the Tobago champions and the top three teams from the Trinidad Premier Division will form a Big 4 competition, to decide the overall 2014 champions.

Speyside got their season going at scenic Mt. Gomery. Coached by former Trinidad and Tobago defender Dwayne Jack, Speyside dominated the first half which yielded two goals. Bishop’s barely troubled their opponent’s goal. And their defence was breached on the half hour, when midfielder Marcus Caesar forced in a cross from close up.

Striker Brandon Benjamin, who had at least three first-half misses, after getting on to a through-ball booted home past exposed Bishop’s keeper Keishorn Small for a second goal in the 36th minute. And Small was beaten once again in the 82nd minute by substitute Ian Paul’s shot.
