Reigning champions Shiva Boys scored a late winner against Naparima College to walk away with a thrilling 2-1 victory in their opening clash of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division competition at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva last evening.
Shiva led 1-0 until the 69th minute when Naps equalised through a wonderful free kick from Keshorn Murphy. Their joy was however short lived as Jude Phillip - ran down the right side beat an offside trap and scored with just seven minutes to go.
Naps started well and made some searching runs into the Shiva penalty area but was unlucky. In the seventh minute Ronaldo McIntosh struck the bar much to the excitement of the Naparima fans who were out in their numbers.
However, in the 14th minute against the run of play Junior Asson scored to give Shiva the lead. After this close range strike Naps came to life looking for an equaliser and for the rest of the half the game was played in Shiva’s half.
The teams went into the locker room with the score 1-0 in favour of Shiva Boys.
Earlier, the first clash between Fatima College and Carapichaima East failed the capture the attention of the crowd, as both teams looked very short of work.
Carapichaima though looked the better of the two and it showed in the final score of 2-0.
The wet turf at the stadium foiled good ball control but Kevon Williams was able to open the doors in the 21st when he netted for Caps.
Fatima tried in vain to level the scores but when the half time whistle went, the score remained 1-0.
On the resumption, Fatima started to push men forward in an attempt to equalise and this left them thin in the back. Elijah King needed no invitation and in the 65th he doubled and the score. Fatima had some near misses towards the end of the match but it was the team from central that recorded a comfortable 2-0 triumph.
