Two second half goals by Adisa Connell and Javed Mohammed gave Naparima College a 2-0 win over Vessigny Secondary in the RBTT South Zone InterCol final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella yesterday.
The victory allowed 'Naps" to clinch the zonal League and InterCol double. But their win also left Vessigny beaten south finalists for the second year in succession.
In the early stages of yesterday's game however, Vessigny had the better of the exchanges and Dirron Smart forced goalkeeper Naparima College goalkeeper Leston Shade to make a good save from his volley in the 22nd minute.
Five minutes later, Kurt Williams' 25-metre low, left footer missed an upright, much to the agony of the Vessigny fans.
At the other end, Naparima's Renato Ramlochan's strike in the 32nd minute was well stopped by Vessigny keeper Sherlon Swan, with a boot.
But after 45 minutes of exciting football, the score remained goalless.
After the resumption, both teams went in search of the vital opening goal. But good defence work and goalkeeping by Shade and Swan kept the score blank, until the 69th minute. But then, striker Connell put Naps in front with a neat header following a left side cross by Cion Samuel.
From then on, it was all Naps.
Coach Kurtwyn Baird's squad, threatened to increase the lead four minutes from full time, but Connell's shot was well saved by Swan. But one minute later, Mohammed finally put the game beyond Vessigny when he beat Swan far to his left with a low shot from 12 metres out.
The Big Five champs Naparima, will now go after the national double when they play in the national quarter-finals on Saturday against the Central champions at Manny Ramjohn. The Central final will be played this afternoon at the Ato Boldon Stadium from 4.15pm.
Also today, neighbours Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive and Fatima College will contest the North final.
