Carapichaima East Secondary will go after its ninth title in the Central Zone of the Coca Cola InterCol after the team crushed Couva East 7-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva on Wednesday.
The Central giants, the lone team in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League in the zone, got a brace each from Molik Robinson and Ivan Dos Santos in the demolition, a result that earned them the right to face Chaguanas North Secondary on Wednesday next week at the same venue in Couva. Other goals came from Dexter Neils, Joshua King and Resean Britto.
Yesterday manager Ashbert Charles said his team will be confident of winning their ninth crown, but they will not be taking their opponents lightly. "We try to focus on the bigger picture than just winning matches. We do not take our opponents for granted, for instance, although it was a large margin of victory for us today, there are areas that we need to work on going forward, such as the guys not applying pressure when they are in defence," Charles explained.
He added, "I found that we were half-hearted while pressing. We were always second to the ball, which is an area we need to improve on moving forward, first against Chaguanas and then the other teams. For the final, once we avoid the complacency, we will win the match comfortably."
Chaguanas North Secondary in their semifinal encounter, defeated Miracle Ministries 3-1 at the same venue, courtesy a double by Mekhi Bain. But on another day, however, the Chaguanas boys could have finished with a much wider margin of victory, had it not been for several easily missed chances by Bain, Hezekiah John, Karel Wells and Syrron De La Rosa among others.
Overlapping defender Albert opened the scoring for the Chagunas boys as early as the 18th minute, before Bain got the first of his double strike, when the Miracle Ministries defence failed to clear a nicely lifted ball into the centre of the box by Albert, and Bain was quick to pounce, firing past a helpless Adois Antoine in the Miracle Ministries goal post.
The teams went to the half-time interval with Chaguanas North leading 2-0, and when the match resumed, John was served a through-ball down the right flank and pulled it back for the onrushing Bain to slot the ball into an empty net in the 41st minute.
However, Miracle Ministries pulled a goal back in the 57th, when Joaquin Villafana picked out Tyrese Collymore with a left-side cross, and he beat goalkeeper David Jan-Pierre with a fierce low drive to his far post.
