St. Mary's edge St. Anthony's 2-1 in battle of the Saints
St Anthony's went down to St Mary's on Saturday by 2-1 at a waterlogged St Anthony's Grounds. The wet conditions only made life more difficult for both sets of players but St Mary's just about deserved the win after outplaying St Anthony's for larger periods of the game.
CIC's early pressure paid off in the 10th minute when Akhil Noel played the ball to a waiting Joel Superville in the St Anthony's box, and Superville blasted his low effort through the legs of the defender and into the far corner of the net to give his team the lead.
Both teams had chances to score in an attacking display put on for the fans. Renaldo Garcia had a superb effort tipped over for a corner, when he volleyed from just outside the Tigers penalty box. Khadeem Riley saw his free kick flash just over the CIC crossbar as his team hunted for an equalizer.
CIC grabbed their second goal in the closing stages of the first half however when Superville turned provider this time after he dribbled into the box from the wing and laid the ball off to Chad Appoo who blasted his left footed shot past Jamal Francois in the St Anthony's goal to give his team a 2-0 lead.
St Anthony pushed forward a lot more after the break as they desperately tried to claw their way back into the game. They were rewarded in the 51st minute when substitute Brandon Quintero was first to react to a dropped cross by CIC keeper, Raheem Belgrave. Quintero acrobatically stretched to the ball and managed to flick it into the back of the net.
Both teams could have added to their tally as the game raged from one end of the pitch to the other, with St Anthony's getting the better of the chances in the second period but failing to convert. CIC looked ever dangerous on the counter attack as well.
Despite a testing final ten minutes, St Mary's held out for the win and would have been much relieved to hear the referee's final whistle.
