Triumph for Carapichaima East Secondary yesterday was pure tragedy for Waterloo High School, as the Central Zone League champions became Coca Cola Central InterCol winners by drubbing their neighbours 8-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
"Caps" played the last 23 minutes of the match with ten men, but it was hardly a problem for them. The runners-up barely put up a fight and the contest was clearly over mid-way through the first half. At the break Waterloo were hopelessly out of it, trailing 6-0.
Shaquille Holder scored twice and Isaiah Rivers and Anton Gill both had a goal on either side of half-time, while Kareem Ryce and Jason James also contributed one goal each to Carapichaima's cause.
Waterloo, though, hit goalkeeper D'Jevon Archibald's far post, crossbar and fluffed a penalty. And as the goals continued coming they tried hard to get back into the match. Unlike their 4-3 semi-final win over Couva West, when they trailed 3-1 at half-time, there was to be no valiant Waterloo comeback.
Carapichaima took four minutes to warm up and, once they had, Waterloo were in trouble. First Gill hit the far post with a shot from the right of the penalty area, then Holder struck his right footer directly at Waterloo goalkeeper Demetrius Edwards.
Edwards was forced to make a couple of saves again before Caps got their first. Isaiah Rivers collected a through-ball from about 25 metres out and took his grand old time to pick his spot high inside the left post.
Carapichaima kept up the pressure, and succeeded in silencing the Waterloo drums in the 18th with their second item. Kareem Ryce sent through Holder on the left and he put the ball on his left foot before blasting past Edwards' outstretched right hand.
Waterloo's fans reverted to their chant, "Waterloo, we want a goal!" It came the other way in the 23rd, this time off the boot of Gill from within the penalty area.
Waterloo had perhaps their best break of the first half when Jemore Clarke was released down the right flank on the counter attack and his cross was mere inches over the head of Jaleel Jeffrey on the penalty spot.
But any confidence they had taken from that effort they lost in the 36th, as Rivers' initial shot took a deflection and landed for Holder on the left. He had no problems beating Edwards from point-blank range.
Four goals turned five in the 45th when Rivers played a back pass to Ryce, who rifled a screamer past the underside of the crossbar. And Caps added another through the right boot of Jason James in stoppage time.
So dispirited were Waterloo that striker Neon Ogarro even changed into his school uniform at the half-time break, before he was ushered back into the dressing room. He eventually returned to the field of play.
The goal-scoring resumed in the second half, Rivers slicing a 22-metre free kick just inside of Edwards's left post.
The perfect opportunity for Waterloo to gext a consolation was a dubiously awarded penalty kick in the 54th, but even that chance they spurned as Ogarro booted the spot kick wide.
Even a free kick from 30 metres down the right flank from Ogarro was not good enough, as his effort on 60 minutes cannoned off the Carapichaima crossbar, so unfortunate were Waterloo.
Caps also had their sombre moments, including one when Ryce earned an early trip to the showers in the 63rd for a blatant kick on Ogarro, who saw yellow for instigating the incident.
The match was thereafter reduced to Caps taking shots at the Waterloo goal, although Gill did manage his second in the 86th minute and Edwards denied substitute Christon Prime two minutes later.
Ogarro just could do no right, as he had a late shot from close range, with Carapichaima's defence scrambling, and somehow shot overbar.
The win ensures Carapichaima now look forward to a tough assignment against South Zone champs Naparima College in the National InterCol semi-finals next week.
Today, the fourth semi-finalists will be known when East winners St Augustine Secondary take on Arima North Secondary from 4 p.m. at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar.

A double each from Isaiah Rivers and Anton Gill piloted Central Zone league and defending champions Carapichaima East to a 8-0 drubbing of Waterloo in the 2010 Coca Cola Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Zonal Intercol final at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, yesterday.
Caps, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Waterloo in their league match, went on a goal spree, as they found the net six times in the first half.
Rivers opened the scoring with his first strike in the 12th minute, before Shaquille Holder doubled the lead six minutes later, 2-0. Gill then got into the action with his first in the 23rd minute to make it 3-0.
Anton Jeffery joined the fun, netting his team’s fourth in the 36th minute, before Kareem Ryce and Jason James netted seconds apart in the 45th minute to make it 6-0 at the half.
Caps continued their assault on the Waterloo goal in the second half, and got goal number seven when Rivers added his second in the 50th minute. The defending champions then got their last item from Gill who finished off his double two minutes from regulation time.
Meanwhile East Zone champions will be decided today, when defending champions St Augustine face Arima North, in a re-match of last year’s semifinal, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, from 4 pm. The “Green Machine” won that match 5-3 on penalty kicks after the score was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
When the two teams met in the league, Gustine ran away 2-0 winners, and assistant coach Trevor Elcock said the team is on a high. “As usual we are always confident, we have won this title more than five times, and we are confident that we will come out winners today. At the moment, the team is comfortable and rearing to,” said Elcock.
Arima’s coach Peter Lewis said they are going to allow the game to come to them. “We will be patient and take the game one step at a time. We are the under dogs and have nothing to lose.
We are confident that we could do it.“We think that we have the players that are capable of beating them, despite they were the only team that got the better of us this season,” said Lewis. He said it is important that they put away their chances, when ever they get them.
