South Zone League and Intercol champion, Naparima will be aiming for its seventh National Intercol title when it takes on Tobago League and Intercol winner Signal Hill this afternoon (Tues) in the 2010 edition of the Coca Cola Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

This year has been a total turn around for Naps, as they have a chance to bag a third title. Last year, while they reached two finals—the zonal Intercol and the National Intercol—they came up empty handed.

The South title holder has only lost twice this season, in the league to Shiva Boys and to St Augustine in the Big Five, and is confident of pulling off the win.

Coach and former national defender Leonson Lewis said the guys are very excited and are focused on what they have to do. “I am not scared heading into this encounter. I was more scared in their semifinal match against Carapichaima than I am now.

While Naparima has a way of thinking they are better than other teams, which can be problems at times. I feel that they will come to throw their all since it is a final.

We cannot take this team for granted, or we will pay the price, and we have to play the way we started against St Augustine, and take the attack to them,” said Lewis. Lewis added that size will always be a factor, and singled out Signal Hill’s inform striker, Darryl Trim as their main threat.

“I call him Usain Bolt. He is fast, he is strong and he could score goals. Our plan will be to try and some how contain him, since he is their main offensive weapon.

Once we could hold him down, we have a 50/50 chance of winning, since their defence is not as strong, and our strikers could take advantage of that.”

Naps won their last national Intercol title in 2007, when they defeated El Dorado 2-0, however the “Blue Thunder” returned the favour to take the title in 2009.

The Bertille St Clair-led Signal Hill has had a dream season, and will be no doubt love to end in fine style by capturing the coveted national crown.

They will be on a high after ousting St Anthony’s in the quarterfinal and Arima, who toppled St Augustine, in the semifinal.
