St Anthony’s College continued its unbeaten run in the North Zone of the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League when it trampled QRC 3-0 at St Anthony’s College Grounds, Westmoorings, yesterday.

All of the “Tigers’” goals were scored in the first half. Luke Hernandez scored a double. His first goal was scored in the 16th when he placed a powerful shot in the corner of the net. The goal was followed by an Ajani Clarence superb volley minutes later to make it 2-0.

Hernandez, who is having a wonder season thus far, wrapped up the scoring on the half hour mark, when his diving header connected from a cross sent in by right-midfielder Kiel Pierre. Meanwhile, East Mucurapo kept ground in hunt for the top spot when they defeated Malick 1-0 at Fatima Ground, Mucurapo.

Alvin Jones netted from the penalty spot in the 58th minute, when he wrong footed Malick goalkeeper Joel San Savior for the winner. Malick’s Ishmael Benoon was adjudged to have fouled Mucurapo forward Akil Campbell in the box, giving the referee no choice but to award the penalty kick.

Both teams were equal at the half. Malick had an opportunity to take the lead in the 28th minute when they were awarded a penalty for Ariel Mc David’s handball in the box. Stepping up, Lester Durham gave a weak attempt, kicking directly toward Mucurapo goalkeeper Dwayne Thomas to latch onto.

Despite the chance for Malick, Mucurapo had more opportunities in the first half. East Mucurapo attacker Campbell had several chances to give his side the lead as did Mc David who squandered a rare opportunity by shooting overbar.

Mucurapo’s attacking performance extended into a strong showing in the second half. The difference between the two teams, however, was the penalty, which lifted East Mucurapo three points behind the leaders, St Anthony’s.

In the other match, a first minute goal scored by Jameel Neptune was enough for Trinity to earn a 1-0 away win over St Mary’s College at St Mary’s Ground, Serpentine Road, to join the Saints on nine points joint third place on the seven-team standing.

Caps, Signal Hill stay perfect.

Carapichaima East Secondary (Central) and Signal Hill (Tobago), the reigning champion of its respective zone both registered comfortable wins to maintain 100 per cent winning records along with St Anthony’s College (North) and Scarborough Secondary (Tobago).

At Carapichaima, the host got a goal each from Denzil Gill (15th) and Shaquelle Holder, two minutes from the end to take all three points while ending the visitors three match winning streak. Despite the loss, Couva West still leads the five-team table with nine points, three ahead of Carapichaima which has two matches in hand.

Gasparillo also improved to six points, but from three matches following a hard fought 1-0 win over Presentation College at Guaracara Park and in the other match, Tabaquite clobbered Waterloo 5-1 led by a hat-trick from Kwasi Elder and two from Keagan Moonessar.

Over in the sister-isle, Purcell Ewing banged in items in the tenth and 79th minute to lead Signal Hill to a resounding 5-0 trouncing of Pentecostal Light & Life at Signal Hill. With the win, Signal Hill moved to nine points from as three matches, the same as main rival, Scarborough Secondary but with a superior goal-difference.

Down South, Presentation College stayed top of the table after a 2-1 triumph over Pleasantville in a top-of-the-table clash at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Amare Thomas fired Presentation ahead after 30 minutes but Pleasantville drew level 12 minutes after the restart only for Mikeel Charles to get a 77th minute decider for Presentation to carry its point tally to 15 from six matches.

However, that could all change today as  Presentation faces a  possible points deduction for breach of competition rules.

On Match Day four of the SSFL, September 17, Presentation fielded a player against Naparima College who was supposed to be serving a one-match suspension after receiving yellow cards in two previous consecutive matches against, Shiva Boys’ and Vessigny and the matter will be heard today by the SSFL’s Disciplinary Committee.

In the other South match, Princes Town edged Shiva Boys’ 1-0 at Princes Town, while  Naparima came up against St Benedict’s College at Marabella.
